Hurricane Sandy left the built portion of Brooklyn Bridge Park largely intact (see Works in Progress, Summer 2010 and Spring 2012). Winds toppled a few trees, but most survived, and the railings, benches, and posts were unscathed. But in exceeding the projected 100-year storm-water surge by nearly two feet, Sandy ruined most of the waterfront park’s electrical systems. “Overall, we are pleased with the park’s resilience against a disturbance of this magnitude,” says its lead designer, Michael Van Valkenburgh.
