David S. Reynolds is a Distinguished Professor at the CUNY Graduate Center. He is the author or editor of 15 books, including Walt Whitman’s America; John Brown, Abolitionist; Waking Giant: America in the Age of Jackson; and, most recently, Lincoln’s Selected Writings.
