Peter Constantine has published translations of works by Mann, Chekhov, Babel, Gogol, Machiavelli, Rousseau, and many other writers. He is professor of translation studies at the University of Connecticut and the publisher of World Poetry Books. His first novel, The Purchased Bride, from which this excerpt is adapted, will be published in April by Deep Vellum.
